继前两部作品深刻探讨了恋爱关系中的“前任”和“备胎”话题后，《前任3》继续开扒两性心理，通过两对男女分手后面对生活的两极态度，将男女双方不同的脑回路充分展现，同时也从侧面传达出情侣间的相处之道。这听起来，挺鸡汤的，但从该片曝光的片段来看，导演田羽生还是将“走肾”的骚贱风格发挥得淋漓尽致，不仅笑料不停，金句更是不断。当被问及电影创作灵感是否来源于自身真实感情生活时，导演田羽生则笑言：“金句都是来自朋友啦，平时聊天就都会记下来。”他还说，希望情侣们看完片后，不要再轻易说分手了，很正能量啊。
